This butterfly was on the track through the Otún Quimbaya reserve on the western side of the Cordillera Central of Colombia. The Alala Sister (Adelpha alala) is found along the Andes from Venezuela to north-west Argentina at altitudes between 400 and 2,600 metres.
The ‘sister’ in the common name is said to refer to the white wing bars resembling a nun’s habit. Somebody must have had a vivid imagination and possibly not entirely pure thoughts in coming up with that one.
