A graduate of the University of Sheffield (BSc, DSc) and the University of Hong Kong (PhD, Hon. DSc), he was Director of the Hannah Research Institute and Hannah Professor in the University of Glasgow, Vice-President of the Zoological Society of London, Chairman of the, British Nutrition Foundation and a member of the Rank Prize Funds Nutrition Advisory Committee.
